This Year, Ask Congress to Join Lutheran World Relief’s Fight Against Malaria
Over the last two weeks, coverage of Haiti’s tragic earthquake has rightfully filled the nightly news and captured our attention. During this crucial time for Lutheran World Relief, and for concerned Americans, it has been difficult to think of anything other than how best to help Haiti recover.
Nonetheless, during this busy time, the Obama Administration has been working hard, and quietly, to finalize the President’s 2011 budget proposal which will be officially presented today. Lutheran World Relief is eagerly awaiting the President’s budget numbers because we have high hopes for his financial commitment to the global fight against malaria. LWR, along with a broad coalition of health, development and faith-based organizations, has long contributed to the fight against malaria through funding and programming around the world.
Malaria kills one million people each year and is the fourth leading cause of child mortality. This means that each day more than 2,000 children die as a result of the disease. Studies show that through death and productive work time lost, entire national economies are weakened by malaria. An advance in the fight against malaria literally means that many LWR partners, around the world, will enjoy longer and healthier lives. It also means that our investment in rural development will prove more fruitful.
We have made major gains in the fight against malaria but the battle is not yet over. We are hopeful that with sustained efforts and increased funding in 2011 and beyond, millions of lives will be saved, economies will be strengthened and child health will improve substantially in malaria-affected countries.
LWR wants your help to ensure that robust U.S. funding for the fight against malaria is made available in 2011. To do so, keep your eyes open for email from LWR in early February. You will receive information on the President’s final budget numbers and be given the chance to email, call and push members of Congress to commit funds that mirror, or exceed, the President’s request for funding to combat malaria. Your involvement in LWR’s anti-malaria efforts will help save, and improve, the lives of millions.
